Will Manchester City’s forgotten midfielder Matheus Nunes eventually make a mark at the world champions? The midfielder appears to have the ability to eventually play a regular role for Manchester City. But having the ability and using it make a mark at a club like Manchester City are two different propositions entirely.

The Portuguese international has made a slow start to his Manchester City career since arriving from Wolves last summer. His quality has been evident on occasions when he has featured for Pep Guardiola’s side. But on other occasions, he has flattered to deceive when given the opportunity to start. Some of that could be down to Nunes needing a season to adjust to life under Pep Guardiola. But there is no doubt that City’s forgotten midfielder does need to refine his game to give himself a better chance of regular football at the world champions.

There is also another question to ponder in regards to Matheus Nunes making a mark at Manchester City. Is the midfielder the type of player that fits Pep Guardiola’s demands? With much of Manchester City’s game focused on control of the game, the strengths of Nunes play at times do not appear ideally suited to life at the world champions. Matheus Nunes looks at his best when he makes driving runs at the opponents defence. His industry and drive from midfield is a key part of his game. At times, his best attribute seems out of place in the world champions line up.

It may also not be this season when Matheus Nunes makes a mark at Manchester City. With 5 games remaining in City’s season, Pep Guardiola will likely prefer his best eleven if everyone is fit and available. There may be a game breaking moment off the bench for Nunes, but as a starter, his moment to finally break through at City may have to wait until next season.

There is no doubt that Matheus Nunes has the quality to forge a career at Manchester City. It’s just a matter of whether or not he will make a mark at the club or if he will remain just a squad player for the treble winners. That does appear to be solely down to him seizing his opportunity when it does arrive.
