Brazilian club Cruzeiro have decided on an incredible initiative to mark International Women’s Day.

The numbers and names on the back of the Cruzeiro shirts will be replaced by shocking statistics relating to women and inequality.

For this evening’s Brazilian Cup game against Murici-AL, Cruzeiro players will each wear shirts detailing different aspects of the appalling treatment of women in Brazil and the challenges they face.

Another shirt reads “Of every 10 young people, 8 have suffered harassment”.

Leticia Bahia, institutional director of the NGO Azminas, which fights for female empowerment, had this to say:

“A lot of people think that the fight for women’s rights does not make sense anymore, but the data that the players will display shows how much this issue remains current.”

Cruzeiro’s director of marketing, Marcone Barbosa, is also eager to have an impact with the campaign.

“International Women’s Day is not just a moment to bring out all the traits of inequality that still exist in Brazil and the world, but it is also a moment of awareness of other aspects related to women.

“It’s important for us to have a moment like this, where you can bring up such important and woman-related issues.”

Wednesday’s fixture is just a first leg match, with the second leg of the third round tie set to take place a week later.
