With one of the highest levels of parity in the world, predicting MLS results is like playing bingo.
Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders, who met in the 2017 MLS Cup, are the only teams that haven’t scored this season. A Red Bulls side playing USL and Academy players crushed Portland 4-0. Now Zlatan is coming. It’s certainly been an interesting first three weeks of the season.
Due to the international break, there are only six league games, and all on Saturday. Let’s try to make sense of it all.
NYCFC 2 New England 0
NYCFC’s the only team in the league with three wins so far this season and have only given up one goal in the process. It’s going to take a great team to defeat them, and the Revs lack the firepower necessary to do so. NYCFC will win this match through their big advantage in the midfield.
FC Dallas 3 Portland 1
FC Dallas have only lost at home five times in the past three seasons combined, and easily dispatched Seattle last weekend. Portland have looked pretty awful, and this looks like an open-and-shut case. Look for Roland Lamah to be huge, scoring one and assisting another.
Columbus Crew 4 D.C. United 1
If I’m going to bet the house on any result this weekend, this is it. D.C. United’s defense was in absolute shambles and somehow they still pulled off a draw against Houston. United has given up back-to-back goals in less than three minutes in back-to-back games. Federico Higuaín (yes, Gonzalo’s brother) is good for a pair of goals.
Red Bulls 2 Minnesota 1
This one could go either way. The Red Bulls are in full CONCACAF Champions League mode and Minnesota come into Red Bull Arena as winners of two of their first three matches. Many believe the Loons are fluky, myself included. However, there’s no telling what line-up the Red Bulls will produce, but I’ll pick them to win if they put out the majority of their starters.
Sporting KC 2 Colorado Rapids 0
Colorado, bottom in our Power Rankings, is the only team in the league that’s played just one match, and it will be curious to see how they perform against an SKC side that’s scored seven goals in the last two games.
Vancouver 2 Galaxy 2
I rate this to be the best match of the weekend. Los Angeles will be shorthanded without the Dos Santos brothers and welcome an extremely exciting Whitecaps side led by newly-acquired forward Kei Kamara, who’s scored three goals in his first two matches. Buckle up folks.
